Wallpaper Wednesday: Terraria

Terraria is an addictive indie title that mixes the sandbox elements of Minecraft with the platforming and action of Castlevania. Ferret has recently gotten himself hooked to it and after many “I told you that you’d like it”, he recommended doing a Wallpaper Wednesday on it. Now here we are with three wallpapers created by the community for Terraria… And Ferret, I told you that you’d like it.

Monday Mod: Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim – SkyBoost

Unfortunately for some gamers the choice between performance and visuals can become a balancing act either due to old hardware or inefficient coding on the developers behalf. In Skyrim’s case, the Creation engine leaves much to be desired when it comes to optimization. Modder Alexander Blade has taken the time to resolve this issue and the results are outstanding.

SkyBoost is a modification that replaces some of the older, less optimized code with newer, more efficient code. This produces an amazing result – FPS increases ranging from 4-10 FPS. While that number might seem small, and unless you’re playing the game at a constantly FPS of 10, this will give most gamers a significant boost – allowing your eyes to enjoy a much smoother Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

You can check out his webpage here for all his latest news and updates on SkyBoost!

Skyrim Housing Mods

You’ve slayed dragons, topple giants, blasted thieves and dodged a myriad of arrows but you still haven’t found the home worthy for your Dovahkiin to settle down in. Here are 5 housing opportunities that will help Lydia carry your burdens, hide you from potential assassination attempts or even fulfill the ultimate role-play of a homeless sadistic assassin. Perhaps one of them is worthy of your Snooze-Ro-Dah.

All authors of the following mod files have given their consent to reside on FilePlanet, or have given approval to have their content uploaded onto all public sites.

Drela’s Cottage by Sk80n: You notice a cottage in the distance and as you finally enter the home you are attacked by a dark elf known as Drela. After defeating the puny elf, you are left with a corpse-ridden house. What do you do with it? Live in it of course! All items in the house have been edited to belong to no one, so you won’t be stealing his remains. Also his corpse will despawn in about a week in-game time, so you won’t be putting up with the dead body smell for long. (Source: Nexus)

Hillside Home by Shawkab: This home is planted on top of a hillside providing a gorgeous view of Skyrim’s mountains. No need to put money down or take out a loan to afford it: just fully upgrade the house in Breezehome (okay, some coin is needed) and find a note on one of your newly furnished tables in the house. Similar to the treasure maps in-game, you must read and use your intuition and locate more clues that will ultimately lead to the house’s destination. (Source: Nexus)

Dovahkiin Hideout by Shawkab: For those who fear that the Dark Brotherhood, this mod will provide a hideout shared between all your homes (making it a perfect panic room). Every house you can purchase in Skyrim will now have a doorway leading to the basement, where you’ll find six mannequins, 4 display cases, and all other kinds of storage – allowing you to stay hidden for weeks. Hjerim Home Improvement by Sk80n: For those special people who decided to live in Windhelm and side with the Stormcloaks (because let’s face it, if you chose Stormcloaks you must be ‘special’), this mod expands the house with a secret room. This room can be upgraded to obtain an Alchemy and Enchanting lab that will bring an Alchemist/Enchanter’s chest, a bookcase, candles and more. (Source: Nexus)

Abandoned Shack by Sk80n: If you happen to be a part of the Dark Brotherhood and want your character to play the role of a homeless sadistic assassin, then this blood-filled derelict home is meant for you! Included with the purchase of the house are: a bed, table, barrel and a fireplace. What else could you ask for? Don’t say a bookshelf as reading isn’t for the Dark Brotherhood. (Source: Nexus)

Wallpaper Wednesday: Minecraft Creations

This week we give you wallpapers that are more than simply scenic shots of Minecraft, but actual in-game creations from its fan-base. You get to pick from one of three wallpapers; the golden gate bridge, an architectural masterpiece (we’re not sure what to call it) and Nyan Cat, as it’s customary for everything internet related to have something about cats.

Free RPG Treasure Chest

We’ve already milked Skyrim for all of its bar-filling worth and are left waiting until Mass Effect 3 launches in March, leaving us craving an RPG in the mean-time. To help alleviate this RPG drought, I’ve found five free RPG-esque titles that will have you fighting in caves, meeting a new race of cat-like creatures with wings, experiencing a custom Final Fantasy and praying that ‘e’ symbol doesn’t kill your character.

Cave Story by Studio Pixel: In Cave Story, you assume the role of an amnesiac boy who helps rabbit-like creatures known as Mimigas all while trying to escape this gigantic maze-like cave. Featuring side scrolling action/platforming and an upgrade system similar to that of recent Castlevania title allowing you to improve your gear, health and abilities; it’s very easy to become consumed with this fantastic indie game.

Melolune by supershigi: From the creator of the song Zombies on my Lawn, this stylized adventure will have you go through a beautiful world that follows the tale of Achaius, a boy whose separated from his twin brother after a catastrophic event takes away their parents’ lives. You’ll meet new friends, including a race of cat-like creatures called Leebles and travel the world in hopes to stop a military faction known as the Ciro Order. This demo will provide up to 4-5 hours of gameplay which is pretty impressive.

Final Fantasy: Endless Nova by Delita Hyral X: A custom Final Fantasy that takes place in a solar system where the sun is beginning the stages of a super nova. For an unknown reason, the super nova never completes – making humanity forget of its danger. This is the starting stage for FFEN, a marvelous free RPG that has over 12 hours of gameplay, an abundance of mini-games, side quests and easter eggs along with a deep and satisfying combat system.

Lost Legends by Ghostwood Games: Being an action-RPG with a massive world filled with quests and monsters to slay, you could say this is Elder Scrolls-lite (especially since they both have 1st and 3rd person view). The combat feels remarkably tight and though the visuals may be dated, they have a certain charm to them. Major updates are coming to this, including the addition of multiplayer that makes this game one to keep an eye on.

NetHack by Mike Stephenson (and plenty of others): Perhaps the closest experience to an old-school D&D game (and definitely the hardest), NetHack is a singleplayer dungeon crawler that emphasizes on the exploration and figuring out the layout of dungeons instead of killing everything. True to the D&D experience, going Rambo will more than likely get you killed. Though it’s a text-based game, the random number generator provides an unlimited number of dungeons and monsters to be discovered. Warning, this is for the hardcore.
