Have you everplayed Half-Life 2 and found yourself wondering what it would be like if you were a mermaid instead of Gordon Freeman? If you are like most people in the world, you probably haven’t. That being said, this week I present to you several unusual but highly unique mods for Half-Life 2.
Titan: XCIX by IZaNaGI In this unique mod, you assume the role of a crew-member aboard the ill-fated starship Titan: XCIX. This mod has received a lot of notoriety for its high-quality storytelling, and unique idea. The voice acting in Titan isn’t exactly award-winning stuff, but the effort to more effectively tell the story is appreciated. If you are a fan of such movies as Event Horizon, or such books as Guns, Germs, and Steel this might be the mod for you.
The Stanley Parable by Cakebread If you want your head to explode, give The Stanley Parable a try! Cakebread’s innovative mod claims to be an “experimental narrative-driven first-person game.” The mod is very simple, and it doesn’t require much explanation. You are Stanley. You will make choices that don’t ultimately matter, and you will play through a story that doesn’t actually end. Perhaps the thing that makes The Stanley Parable creepiest is the very “meta” nature of the mod. This mod has fantastic voice acting, and is all-around superbly done. With six different endings, you will want to find all of them for yourself! Give it a go, will you!
Water by Half-Life Short Stories Team From the Half-Life Short Stories team comes Water, a Half-Life 2 custom campaign in which you are a mermaid. Yes, you read that correctly. The mod is categorized as “comedy,” but the fish men look a little bit more like a bizarro horror Sock Boy. I believe the developers themselves came up with the best way to describe this mod. According to the team, “Water is a third-person puzzle solving adventure game with a unique look and gameplay. It’s a story about a mermaid, and fish men who aren’t fish men. A story that brings you into tears and fears. It’s about fish people, harp instruments, swimming, and crazy priests.” Frankly, if that truly epic description of Water doesn’t sell you on the mod, I don’t know what will.
GraviNULL by Team GraviNULL Do you like to mess with crazy physics? In this simple but very clever mod, you control a character in zero-gravity environments, and are forced to move around using a gravity gun with a “grapple” function. You use the grapple function to move around and control floating mines with the ultimate goal of killing your opponents with them. It seems like players biggest contention with this game is that it is hard to find opponents, which is just a darn shame!
THAT by notxenon THAT is another highly unusual Half-Life 2 mod with no real objective. Creator Notxenon is a strong proponent of video games as art, and created this mod to help realize his vision. You are tasked with exploring several maps of abstract scenery, with the goal of simply enjoying what you discover. THAT is very simplistic in that respect, but it is definitely refreshing to see more unique and artistic mods, like THAT.
