Many of us older gamers have already slain Diablo, Mephisto and Baal more than we count. The idea of returning to the Rogue Encampment one more time may sound a bit unappealing, but with the help of these mods you can shake up the hellish world of Sanctuary into a fresh, new and challenging place.
These modifications will not function properly in the multiplayer section of Diablo II.
Median XL by BrotherLaz: This is your basic (but also very good) overhaul mod. It gives all the classes in the game skill tree revisions, giving 210 new skills along with adding 28 ‘uberquests’ which will test even the most hardcore Diablo players. Monster AI has been improved plus new monster types, items, runes, gems, crafting and more. Great for those who want to keep the game true to the original.
Snej Mod by Team Snej-Mod: Snej shakes up the Diablo II formula by raising the level cap to 500 (yes, 500), skill levels to 60, new monsters, dungeons, larger inventory and more items than you can Whirlwind at. Speaking of that magical ability, it is returned to its original form in this mod. Terrific for those who want to stray away from the vanilla game and have a good challenge.
The Hordes of Chaos by Diabolic Studios: This total conversion changes the story of Diablo II greatly with a new plot and enemies. Stop the amassing Goblin Horde by defeating their three warlords before their march upon Civilization and that is just the beginning. Also features new quests, skills, bosses, monsters and even new classes for you to play with making this a great departure from Diablo II.
Elements by Char: For those who like to spice things up, Elements gives every monster including bosses a chance to gain random immunities. As their level increases, so does that chance. To help you counter this, Elemental Weapons can be found and equipped that do elemental damage instead of physical. This also comes with a new skill system but its defining feature is the difficulty spike.
Dark Moon by jym: This one is bit of an oddity but still has some interesting mechanics. Your resistances start out at -50, -100, -200 for the difficulities Normal, Nightmare and Hell respectively. A strict death penalty is inflicted where you lose stats after dying so many times. Your pet can now equip all items and they have new skills to choose from. Maps have been revamps along with the player skills and item lists.
