Losing sleep over games? Frictional’s “Amnesia” is really scary!

“Indie” games have a bit of a stigma associated with them. Amidst the thousands of turds, there are a number of gems out there that shine brightly (yes, I know you can technically polish a turd…let’s move on). I’ve played a number of Indie games in my time, from the now infamous Braid, to a game in which you pilot a jet-pack-toting kitten to the beat of wonky techno.

The Swedish indie development team Frictional Games has gained much notoriety as of late. Frictional is famous for its intensely scary horror titles Penumbra and Amnesia. I’ve always loved horror games, but I enjoyed them from a distance; when I say “distance,” what I mean is hiding behind a pillow. As a result, I thought exploiting my ridiculous fear and reluctance to play such games would make for a fun blog (masochist?)!

Either way, here it is – I present to you a blog in which you can laugh at my misery while I play and/or discuss horror games. For my maiden post, I figured there would be no better game to cover than Frictional’s now infamous horror title “Amnesia: The Dark Descent.” Without further ado, here is part one of my inevitably shameful playthrough.

Yep, pretty embarrassing stuff. It will only get worse from here, I’d venture.

Matchy Mod:

My “matchy mod” for this game is a bit of an unusual one. Throughout the game, when Daniel begins to lose sanity, a horrible sort of crunchy-cracky noise will play. After having heard the noise, I read that it was the sound of Daniel’s teeth grinding. Shortly after reading that, I read that Frictional came out and debunked the whole toothy thing. For some reason, however, the debunking is irrelevant. I will always think of it as Daniel grinding his enamel away ever-so-disgustingly. Urk! I can’t scarcely deal with it. As a result, I present this mod from the talented creator DXN, entitled “Subtler Teeth Grinding.” Yes, I know it isn’t teeth grinding, but making the noise less pronounced will help ME maintain MY sanity!

If you are interested in giving this fantastic game a go, there is a demo version available. Feel free to traipse through the lovely Brennenburg Estate. Lovely mutated house-servants will be there to attend your every need (this isn’t true at all)!

I still have yet to get past the opening overtures of the game, so you’ve done better than me. There is something about KNOWING that throughout the game I’m going to basically be powerless that just makes me averse to the whole thing. At least in F.E.A.R I have guns. Huge guns. Lots of huge guns. In Amnesia I guess I can only grind my teeth in terror!

Scary stuff but good… How do i post on top… I started but was about to die of insanity wen i figuered out i had another lamp then quit from anxiety.

    • Nick says:

the one part I could see people getting stuck and not going on is when you go into the cellar sorta are to find those rods awesome game the lack of combat makes it great I want these guess to get to making a Cthulhu game like Dark Corners of the Earth

This was so entertaining. My husband Chris and I sat and watched the entire thing…him saying “she should have left that door open so that if someone chases her she can run back through quicker and shut the door on them” and me covering my eyes when you went around every corner to prevent myself from getting startled and peeing myself. ;) Can’t wait to see the follow-up, assuming you don’t get killed in the castle sometime in the next week. Be careful!

    • Missy says:

Thanks a bunch! I am glad you and your husband were both able to enjoy the video! It is a good idea to empty your bladder before hitting the ‘start’ button!

  3. Flippy says:

You’ve got a nice set of ladyballs for playing this. Horror games tend to turn me into a little girl with a thumb sucking problem. Every time you decapitated a suit of armor I half expected there to be a screeching alien head inside ready to feast on your jugular. Looking forward to next week’s butt-clenching gameplay!

  4. Aoret says:

This may seem a bit odd, but watching you slam objects into the ground over and over until they broke was hilarious. It is neat to get to see gameplay videos like this. Especially for horror games, getting to experience other’s reactions is a ton of fun.

Thanks for the tip on the mod download! I actually played Amnesia briefly a month or so ago, and that noise is definitely disturbing.

Can’t wait to see the next installment! :D

  5. Clownboy says:

I haven’t played very many horror games but this looks like one that I really want to try. Also I love you you just like breaking things, That is totally how i play these type of games myself.

stop saying “may or may not”

  7. CptGemini says:

The only horror game to ever scare the pants off me was ‘The suffering’. That game quite often made me jump and raise my heart rate through the roof.

    • Missy says:

I was actually looking The Suffering up a bit after having read your post. It looks really scary! I always wondered where that crazy blade legs man came from!

  8. Handshakes says:

This is a great idea for a video series!

Myself, I really wanted to like Amnesia. I got all geared up for it: Lights out, headphones on, volume to deafening… But it was just so damned boring!

For all of the cool and creepy atmosphere, the physics puzzles are just so bad and ever present. I found that instead of getting the feeling of being oppressed by my dread, ghastly surroundings, I was instead only feeling oppressed by the dread, awful physics puzzle that I knew was lurking around the next corner.

    • Missy says:

I appreciate the compliment! I have yet to encounter any physics puzzles as far as I know, but considering I had a difficult time opening a door…I am afraid.

  9. Anonymous says:

this game should be banned! not that is so scary but the story is weird and discomforting product of suspicious minds. and i should have better things to do than to play hide and seek whit a monster

  10. jenn says:

i enjoyed how u let the game into your head. u embraced your fears and rode the wave of anxiety. u showed how fun it is to be scared of turning a corner. keep breaking stuff w/ enthusiasm. i await your next witty installment.

  11. Brian D. says:

I enjoyed listening to you play the game through the part you did. I thought you did quite well and quite frankly my girl would have probably played exactly the same way you did. To me anyway it didn’t sound like you were too scared, maybe you were but I didn’t notice it. I tend to play the game with 7.1 surround sound headphones, lights off, and volume up as someone else mentioned. Now I also play late at night 12 and after lol. Believe me I can only do so long without taking breaks. I can’t wait for your next installement and if you already have one, please direct me to it :) (Also I love watching you break things, that made my day :)

    • Missy says:

I wasn’t terribly afraid of the beginning. I told myself, “It’s just the beginning…nothing TOO bad should happen!” I promise it will get worse though. I am also heeding Frictional’s advice and playing with a headset in a dark room. I don’t love it, but I do agree that it makes the experience all the more scary!

  12. Geo says:

So, I never made it past the first hiding sequence, way to be braver than I am. Okie dokie!

    • Missy says:

I could be mistaken, but I don’t think I’ve reached that part just yet. Who knows, maybe I will suffer a massive heart attack at that point?

  13. puNDuKE says:

Almost looks like how the Alone in the dark series should have gone in the direction of. Reminded me a lot of an updated version of the original which was indeed scary as hell. Anything involving a huge mansion type house that your alone in that is haunted is enough to scare the pants off of me at least.

  14. Alison says:

Eeep. That is a scary game!

However, I’m not sure which is scarier: watching you play the game, or reading all the “ladyballs” comments afterwards. ;)

I really loved your commentary, M!

  15. Max says:

Hi learn how to speak up in the video

  16. Zilor says:

I absolutely loved watching this, my fiance will not do horror anything anymore, one day sure next day never again, but this reminds me so much of how she thinks and plays and the silly scared but trying not to seem it voice, Love it! Can’t wait for the next one!

  17. Vi da says:

I dont know about you guys, but for me, Amnesia killed the Horror Genre. What that means? Before i was playing Amnesia, i got pretty much scared from every horror game, now after Amnesia, i’m never scared in any games of the genre.

Why is that? Well i think that Amnesia raised the bar of scary games that high, that i know how it is to feel the horror in a that much high level, that everything besides Amnesia is just not scary at all.

  18. Tigirl says:

I would not have even gotten that far in the game, assuming I had it. And my computer doesn’t have sound, so I can’t really watch it. Maybe someday I will scare myself by getting a horror game, but I’ll just stick with purple dragons and guys in green for now.

  19. One remembers that humen’s life seems to be not very cheap, nevertheless different people need cash for different things and not every one gets big sums cash. So to get some mortgage loans and student loan should be a correct way out.

  20. buy essays says:

Some people state that college students opt for the easiest way when buy custom essay papers. Nevertheless, that is not very simple to get good stuff online!
