The demo for the Indie title Heavy Hogur has recently been released and is a surprisingly solid experience (though the floor tiles are not so solid). You play as the dwarven miner known as Hogur Rockscrubber – a hard working dwarf trying to find a lost treasure. The player helps guide Hogur through various caves to collect precious gems and minerals to progress through the game.
Sounds like a walk in the park, right? Well you are wrong on both accounts – you are not in a park and this is no simple walk. Hogur is an exceptionally heavy dwarf, and his extra baggage makes the tiles he walks on occasionally sink lower into the earth. This is where planning your movements along with trial and error kick in. Then throw in special tiles (for example, you can only move in a specific direction on arrow tiles) and you have a winner who will challenge yet not frustrate you.
During my playthrough, I grew cocky due to the introductory levels. Once I got to the fifth cave, I was dumbstruck for about 10 minutes as Hogur kept getting stuck as the first gem was too enticing to not take. My greed was my demise as I could never find the proper path until I actually learned I must think before I move and then suddenly I could actually progress. Games that actually provoke my brain into problem solving are one of the main reasons I’m a gamer. If you want to try an Indie title before it explodes into something huge, Heavy Hugor is the game for you.
